What’s the difference between Hedge Cutters & Hedge Trimmers 

It may be a simple question but do you really know? Yes, Hedge Trimmers and Hedge Cutters are used in a similar fashion to slim down hedges. Below we look into both items further and their ideal uses. 

Hedge Trimmers

Hedge Trimmers are used for trimming hedges – so lightweight work 

New hedges don’t need robust trimming within the first couple of years after planting, as they are still forming. All that is required is pruning in winter or early spring. After the hedges have become more established you can trim them with a Hedge Trimmer to keep them dense and compact. 

Hedge Trimmers are ideal for lightweight branch and bush maintenance – so if you’re looking for a pruned boxed hedge effect or even something more elaborate such as hedge shaping, it will take more frequent trimming –  usually once a year for informal hedges and twice a year for formal hedges.

Hedge Cutters

Hedge Cutters are far more robust and ideal for heavy-duty tasks. 

Only to be used on more established bushes & hedges, Hedge Cutters are ideal for cutting larger bushes back and breaking down larger branches. Hedges tend to be cut annually (depending on the type of bush/hedge you have) but it can vary from Conifer, Evergreen, Hornbeam & Beech as these may need tending up ⅔ times a year – however, some may cut and shape ever 6 weeks or so in the height of the growing season. 

So, to summarise both Hedge Cutter & Hedge Trimmer get the job of trimming, cutting & shaping your hedges and bushes, but in very different ways. They both save time and effort (especially with larger branches)
